NHS & public sector pay in the UK

Back in December 2022 I wrote a post about NHS and public sector pay saying that although it’s unacceptable someone working a full time job should rely on benefits or food banks to sustain themselves we should also look at the full package those in the private sector enjoy – Previous post

Today an article in The Spectator seems to have picked up on this recognising that a nurse on a headline wage of £35,000 a year actually receives a total package equivalent to almost £62,000 once accrued pension rights are taken into account. In other words, we are paying our public sector workers well, it’s just that much of the benefit is locked away in the distant future – The Spectator

Someone has finally realised that there’s more to public sector pay than base pay, the unions (as anyone who negotiates will try to do) are cherry picking the deal, it’s time those negotiating on the side of the employer stepped up to the mark and both sides need to agree a common baseline for negotiations which must be total package. The tax paying public are being let down if this doesn’t happen.
