There’s so much comment about poor productivity from those working from home but in reality this is purely down to firstly setting objectives that are SMART.
Where (geographically) the employee delivers the objectives is irrelevant, the employee may need to be somewhere to deliver some of the objectives equally he / she may be able to deliver them from anywhere in the world.
It’s also about the manager putting in place systems and processes that can clearly show if the objectives are being met and if not the manager can provide the relevant level of support to enable the employee to complete the objectives.
Far to often the manager (or management team) set “woolly” objectives that no one can measure and then when the business is not delivering what was expected everyone ends up arguing with the employee (who may well think that he/she has delivered ) about how useless they are, the search for blame starts and no one wins.
If you can’t measure it don’t set it – solve that problem first, then the business can either celebrate success or at least understand who is not performing – which may well be the manager or the management team!
